I thought of this project because I want to report on how it affected New York City and how it recovered. It will be photos of the local area by the world trade center and places near it. I think that memorials are pictures of the past and it will be opposite of the present pictures. I couldn’t think of an original idea for a project so I looked in a magazine for the subject. I read in Newsweek about the 9/11 present photos from past photos, which interested me to this subject. I will be shooting people, buildings, restaurants and street that will reflect the present time New York. I think it is important use daylight because it shows the opposite effect from the dark past. It shows that New York is back on track. I might also consider firehouses and police departments as part of the project but I don’t know if it fits in the criteria of my project. I don’t know if I want to take pictures inside so I will have to take it in front of the building. At the hereisnewyork.org photos looking back at the photos has strong memories of lost feeling. I like to look on the bright side of things in a picture and not try to capture the past. The security level in New York City is much calmer because Bush is fighting back the terrorist. There used to be protest against George Bush war in Iraq at union square but I’m not sure if they are still protesting. That would be great for the photo project. Another place is the church where everyone prays for victims that lost their family. I will like to shoot everyday New Yorkers because they keep New York alive. I will use unique angles that will bring the picture to a interesting point of view. I think if it has a nice background and body movement it will look like something to talk about. My photo skills haven’t been doing so good because I focus on flat areas in a subject. This project will extend my skills in taking a picture. I will be shooting in the daytime because it is outdoors. I will try to use the depth of field procedure. Photojournalism is more like catching things in action and it never stops. I would like to have this effect with the project. I like to take pictures of vivid objects against a dirty rough texture. I want the pictures to look how like New York should be by using that color scheme. The type of day will look like it’s the afternoon in the city. The natural lighting will forecast no shadow unless I take it in late evening. I want the pictures to have a lot of layers instead of a one flat area. I’m interested in making each picture a different mood by the lighting. I want the afftect that New York has recuperated or not. It will have a classic feeling in the picture but in present time. I don’t know the actual trick to it maybe I can look at old pictures. I will go near South Ferry to fit in the subject.

Nick Koudis
http://www.koudis.com/portfolio/pages/18.htm

In the photo he uses a directional depth of field. The angle of the picture is perpendicular like a plane making a turn. The ladies body twist to the front angle to make the picture match the perspective. The eifel tower hot dog is long in length which makes it go towards the camera. The cabinets show the depth of field from the the front of the imac to the end of the tower. The color also makes the eye think that the subject is going towards us. The red dress and hot dog shows us the important subjects of the picture. The flouresent green is a fill in color for the background which is very bright. I think he captures a thoughtful way of looking in the kitchen with depth.

Karl Blossfeldt
http://www.masters-of-photography.com/B/blossfeldt/blossfeldt_fern.html

This photo has a interesting position because it move to the right and left. Two of the stem is going to the right and four is going to the left. The object looks like a old rusted metal but is a flower. They remind me of decorated gates. I like the way it spirals on the top giving a symetrical composition. There are different levels of height that gives it off balance. It has a cross hatch layer that makes it look weaved together like in a textile. The lines give off a water effect like a river. Its a feminine style because of the swirls. In graphic design it would be great to use as a decorative pattern for a front book cover.

Greg Shapps
http://www.shappsphotography.com/02.html

The ordinary object of the tea cup turns extordinary when color and image effects are added. The brown background matches the color of tea which makes you feel as if tea is served in restaurant. The table is glass which can be seen by the light reflection. To make the image more powerful heat of the smoke vaporizes in the air. The kettle color yellow makes the image have a modern look to it. The teabag has the label hanging down from the table making it noticable for a teabag. The sugarcubes by the cup has a intention that the tea hasn't been drunk. The asian characters on the cup makes it look feel as if it is from east of Asia but the kettle look American or European.

Joel Meyerowitz
http://www.joelmeyerowitz.com/photography/books_enlarge.asp?bookvar=2&pixvar=11&titlevar=

Joel captures the essence of springtime. The clean sheets are blowing in the wind and looks like it has dried off from washing. The colors have spring colors that compares with the season. The skies are cloudy and going in one direction with the wind. The sheets capture a windy day because it is blowing in all directions. The shadows on the ground from the sheets make the day seem bright. The fence has direct lighting while the house has reflective lighting. There is a contrast between the white fence and side of the house. The mood is set in a cool evening because the way everything lays out in the sun and wind.

Point Of View

The thing that would interest an old person is going out most of the day. Old people go out by the supermarkets in the afternoon to buy food, if they don’t have a lot of money they would look for special discounts. They sit in the parks and feed the pigeons or read a newspaper. The old would notice fast coming lanes as they cross the street. Some people may be helpful to citizens like carrying their bags.

The photographic style would be in a slow and quiet environment. It would be at a low level shoot because they have arch backs. The photo could be in low light to make it feel comfortable such as a park under the trees. It should have a soft misty look in the style. The photograph should feel as if time is endless because old people are slow.

The picture I have taken is a couple of peppers at the supermarket. I took the picture because it compares to old people. It’s a green color that people often don’t like. And it wrinkles like their skin. It stands out from the rest of the vegetable and fruits because it’s different in shape. Old people are the same because they are not like the rest of the younger crowd. It sits in the box waiting to be bought by an elderly person.

Greyhound Bus Terminal; 33rd and 34th Streets between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. It looks as if it was hot day and the men in the picture wore suits and long coats. The people never wore much color in that era which shows it in the picture. The art deco of the Greyhound building is round at the edges like the way they built the cars. On the right side of the photo there is an unfinished road that’s made of dirt. On the back of the Greyhound terminal is an old building that has a clock on top of it, which today is not made.

Chester Higgins
Women - Guinee
http://www.chesterhiggins.com/portfolios_women.html?gallery=portfolios_women&skipno=21&currentIndex=3

Higgins uses the translucent curtains to capture the soft light. The light reflects from the curtains on to the subject’s face. The light softens the face with details. The direction of the light comes from the right side giving the left a dark tone. The highlights make the infrastructure into a bold shape from the back light. It is a low key image because you can see only dark tones under the tower. The slope of the hill continues on to the shape of the back seat, it helps the viewer to look toward the motorcycle. The skies make the bike look spacious as if it stands by itself.
